Subject: Report on the British Naval air trials unit at Clark field
From: Lt (A) P.R. Phillips, R.N.V.R.
Date: 19th July, 1945
To: Flag officer Naval Air Pacific
On May 14th 1945, two L.F. III Seafires, Nos. NN610 and NN611, were flown from H.M.S. Chaser to Clark Field, Luzon, to take part in trials with captured Japanese aircraft, operated by Technical Air Intelligence Unit.
On arrival it was found that the captured aircraft were not ready for the trials, but at the end of a week a Jack (the only one so far captured) and a Judy 33 were ready. These aircrafts were both flown once for Recognition Photographs, but, unfortunately, both were destroyed on the ground, when a B24 crashed into them and burst into flames. Both Seafires were damaged and all of the Seafires spares were destroyed in this accident, but further spares were obtained from H.M.S. Unicorn at Leyte, to enable the Seafires to continue operating.
2. Three Franks, two Tojos, two Nicks, a Betty, a Jill, and a George 11 were rebuilt in the course of two months, unfortunately the George, both Tojos, and one of the Franks crashed on landing, due to weak landing gear and poor brakes, while the Betty was found one morning sitting on two oil drums, its landing gear having collapsed during the night.
3. The only fighter aircraft which remained serviceable long enough to take part in the trials was one of the Franks. A separate report on this trial is attached.
4. Trials were started with Tojo and Nick, but were not completed as both aircraft became unserviceable in the air. The maintenance problems on the Japanese aircraft were numerous and repair difficult, as no two planes of the same type had directly interchangeable parts.
5. Other types of Japanese aircraft at Clark Field included Dinah, Irving, Zeke, Oscar, Tony, Peggy, Tabby and Thelma, but were not flown.
6. American aircraft taking part in the trials were the P51 and F.6.F. both which were inferior to the Seafire below 10,000ft.
7. Major Nelson-Gracie R.M. who was in charge of the British Unit left to take up a new appointment at the end of one month. In consequence, when there was no opportunity fir further trials, one of the Seafires was flown to Ponam on the 15th July, while the other was left at Samar with the Maintenance Party.
8. Although the trials were not as successful as was hoped, there was ample opportunity to study the construction, appearance, maintenance problems and general condition of many types of Japanese aircraft. A report on the air engineering aspects could be obtained from Lt. (A) A.G. Parry, R.N.V.R. A.E.O. of the British Trials Unit.
9. Some excellent flight photographs were obtained, and these have been handed over to the Staff Intelligence Officer for transmission to the R.N./R.A.N. Recognition School, to whom they will be most valuable.
Report on trials between Frank 1 and the Seafire L.F.III at Clark Field, Luzon - 29/6/45.
The aircraft tested was a standard Japanese Frank 1, captured in fair condition and repaired at Clark Field. During the trial, the constant speed unit became faulty and full power could not be maintained due to the engine racing. Throughout the trial, the Frank was limited to 250mm manifold pressure and 2900 r.p.m., as the engine had only run eight hours.
Neither aircraft carried any ammunition, but were operationally serviceable in all other respects.
Performance.
Comparative level flight speed runs were made at 5,000, 15,000 and 20,000 feet.
At 5,000 feet, cruising at 180 Kts, the Frank opened up to 250mm and 2900rpm. The Seafire was able to formate easily in the acceleration until a speed of 230 kts IAS was obtained, the Seafire using plus 11 1/2 lbs boost and 2650rpm, when the Frank's CSU failed.
The Frank then climbed, using the same settings, from 180 kts at 5,000 feet to 10,000 feet at its estimated best climbing speed of 160 mph. The Seafire climbed in formation using plus 6 lbs at 2650 rpm throughout.
Re-assuming cruising speed at 10,000 feet the climb was resumed to 15,000 feet the Seafire formating at 140 kts using plus 2lbs at 2850rpm. (Maximum available boost at 2850rpm was plus 6 lbs.)
The Frank then accelerated at 15,000 feet still using 250mm and 2900 rpm, until a speed of 205 kts IAS was attained, when the CSU again failed. At this stage the Seafire was using plus 6 lbs at 3000 rpm. On applying full available boost (plus 8 lbs) the Seafire attained a speed of 220 kts IAS.
The climb was resumed to 20,000 feet, but as the Seafire was still holding the Frank, full boost was applied at 3000rpm, (plus 6 lbs, falling to plus 3 1/2 at 20,000 feet) and the Seafire climbed at 100 kts IAS. 20,000 feet was reached approximately 45 seconds before the Frank. (The Seafire used was able to climb to 10,000 feet from take off in two minutes and fifty seconds.)
Acceleration was again tried at 20,000 feet, but the Frank's CSU again failed when top speed was almost attained, the Seafire drawing ahead at 218 kts IAS with plus 4 1/2 lbs and 3000 rpm (Maximum power available).
Maximum rates of turn were tried at 5,000 feet, speed 180 to 160 kts, the Seafire outturning the Frank fairly easily, although the Frank's rate of roll was 25% better.
The Frank's controls do not stiffen at high speeds as much as other Japanese fighters but it is still inferior at high speed maneouvres.
The combat flaps do not appear to improve Frank's manoeuverability to any appreciable extent.
As is the case with most Japanese aircraft, considerable vibration and rough running of the engine was encountered when high boost was maintained for any length of time.
It must be remembered that the Frank was not using full power, and that top speeds cannot be assessed for the setting used, due to the propeller overspeeding.
A full description of the appearance and theoretical performance of Frank 1 can be found in TAIC Summary No.22, dated January 1945.
Conclusions
Although the Frank1 is not as maneouverable as the earlier Japanese fighters, pilots should still take advantage of high speed performance superiority when engaging it in combat.
Its top speed would be about 330 mph at sea level, 400mph at 20,000 feet and 380mph at 30,000 feet when fitted with the Ha.45, Model 21 engine. All figures should be reduced slightly when the Model 12 engine is installed. Frank's armament is still 2 x 20mm M.G. in the wings, carrying 150 rounds for each gun, and two 12.7mm M.G. firing through the propeller, carrying 350 rounds. Frank has been reported carrying a fixed tail gun, firing aft.
Trim Tabs, elevator only, effective.
Fowler type flaps, 0, 15, 30 degrees.
Climb angle is not steep, and normal in all respects.
Control forces are not heavy.
Handling good up to 270 mph but is too heavy at 300 mph.
Gentle stall. Clean at 109 mph, landing gear and flaps down, 90 mph.
Vision is poor, due to the narrow cockpit and forward position of the pilot's seat.
